GREEK Eudoxus: 370 BC
In 370 BC, Greek astronomer Eudoxus of Cnidus
explained celestial motions by supposing that a vast
sphere holding the stars on its inner surface revolved
around the Earth. And to account for lunar, planetary
and solar motions, he placed these heavenly bodies
inside their own spherical shells which revolved in
various ways.
Eudoxus also divided the sky into 12 equal signs
(zodiac) and introduced a calendar system based on the
Babylonian calendar. He is credited with discovering
that the solar year is actually about 6 hours longer
than the accepted 365 days.
